Getting Crane-Certified in Coolidge, Arizona
Coolidge grew up around cotton gins and the construction camp for Coolidge Dam, which gave the town its name in the 1920s. A century later it has a large vehicle factory on Houser Road, now owned by Lucid, and a regional college campus at Signal Peak. Operators and riggers here can prepare for accredited crane certification exams online and keep working while they study, instead of taking time off to sit in a classroom somewhere up the highway.

From truck factory to EV expansion space
Nikola broke ground in Coolidge in July 2020 on a roughly 430-acre parcel, planning a plant of about one million square feet for heavy trucks. After Nikola filed for Chapter 11 in February 2025, Lucid won the bankruptcy auction for the Coolidge plant and Nikola's former Phoenix headquarters, adding more than 884,000 square feet to its Arizona footprint and offering jobs to more than 300 former Nikola workers. Lucid said the space would support production of its Gravity SUV and its coming midsize platform. Its main factory in Casa Grande is about 25 minutes away.
Converting a plant from one product to another is crane-heavy work: tearing out old lines, setting new tooling, upgrading power and adding mezzanines. If you want to be on those crews, a nationally accredited operator or rigger card is a practical way to show a contractor you already know the fundamentals.
Ag roots still show up on the job
Farming around Coolidge means cotton gins, grain storage, irrigation structures and pump stations. Replacing a gin stand, setting a grain bin ring or placing a pump on an irrigation district canal are all lifts with awkward geometry and often soft footing beside water. Boom trucks and smaller hydraulic cranes do much of this, and service truck crane or articulating crane certification fits operators who spend their days on those trucks rather than on big commercial sites.
Plan around the season
Coolidge sits on the open desert floor between the Phoenix and Tucson metros, with nothing much to break the wind. Monsoon storms from July through September can throw up dust and strong gusts in minutes, and summer heat routinely tops 105°F. Practical habits matter: pick early, keep a wind meter on the boom or a handheld on site, watch for outflow boundaries on radar, and remember that heat stress affects judgment long before someone collapses.
The National Park Service's Casa Grande Ruins National Monument sits on the north side of town, protecting a Hohokam structure from the 1300s. It is a good reminder that this valley has been built on, and lifted in, for a very long time.
How online prep fits with the rest of the process
Arizona doesn't license crane operators itself; ADOSH enforces the federal standard. Details are in our Arizona requirements guide.
- Study the written material at home: load charts, rigging, signals, site setup and OSHA rules.
- Schedule your written exam with the certifying body; most Coolidge candidates test in the Phoenix or Tucson metro.
- Arrange seat time and a practical exam on the right crane type. Online study does not replace that hands-on test.
- Get your employer's evaluation, which federal OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires in addition to certification.
Common questions
Is Lucid hiring crane operators in Coolidge?
We can't speak for any employer's hiring. What we can say is that plant conversions and expansions generally bring in contractors who need certified operators and riggers.
Which certification should a boom-truck driver get?
It depends on the truck. Knuckle-boom delivery trucks fit articulating crane certification; telescopic service trucks fit service truck crane certification; larger boom trucks may fall under mobile crane categories.
Can I study in Spanish?
Ask about language options on the enrollment form. Exam language availability depends on the certifying body.
Is there a job guarantee?
No. We prepare you for certification exams; we don't promise jobs, passing scores or licenses.
