Green Valley Crane and Rigging Exam Prep Along I-19
Green Valley is not a city at all. It is an unincorporated census-designated place in Pima County, about 25 miles south of Tucson on Interstate 19, built from 1960s ranch land into one of Arizona's best-known retirement communities. It is often lumped together with Sahuarita next door, but the work picture is a little different: fewer new subdivisions, more remodels and service jobs, and a large open-pit mine on the western horizon. If you live here and want an accredited crane or rigging certification, our online course prepares you for the written exams at your own pace.

No town hall, so the county sets the rules
Because Green Valley has no municipal government, building permits and land use run through Pima County. Contractors who also work inside Sahuarita town limits or in Tucson need to keep track of which jurisdiction they are in, since right-of-way permits and work-hour limits can differ. None of that changes how an operator is certified, but it does affect how and when a crane can be set on a street.
The community's roots explain its building stock. Investors bought about 2,900 acres of Canoa Land Grant grazing land in 1961 and opened the community in 1964, and a large share of homes and recreation centers date from the 1970s through the 2000s. Green Valley Recreation alone runs more than a dozen recreation centers. Aging roofs, pools and mechanical systems create steady demand for small lifts: rooftop package units, solar arrays, shade structures and pool equipment set with boom trucks and articulating cranes.
Sierrita and the mining contractor work
West of town, Freeport-McMoRan's Sierrita operation has mined copper and molybdenum since 1959. Mine maintenance contractors handle mill liners, pumps, motors, conveyor components and shovel rebuilds, which are some of the heaviest routine lifts in southern Arizona. Plenty of Green Valley residents commute to that work, or to the mines farther north along the corridor.
On the mine itself, MSHA is generally the regulator. Many contractors still ask for nationally accredited crane and rigging credentials, and the card is required for construction work off the property, which falls under ADOSH. Mine-trained riggers who earn Rigger Level II often find it opens doors to lift-planning roles in construction too.
Foothills, missile silos and mountain weather
Homes on the eastern side climb toward the Santa Rita Mountains and Madera Canyon, which means sloped driveways and lots with limited room for outriggers. The Titan Missile Museum, the last remaining of 54 Titan II sites that were on alert from 1963 to 1987, sits just off I-19 near Duval Mine Road and is a reminder that this area has handled very unusual heavy lifts in the past.
Summer monsoon storms build quickly over the Santa Ritas and can push outflow winds across the valley. Winter brings cool mornings and occasional high winds ahead of Pacific storms. Decide your wind cutoff before the job starts, and measure at the jobsite rather than relying on Tucson airport readings 25 miles away.
Getting your card while living south of Tucson
Arizona does not run its own crane licensing program. ADOSH applies federal Subpart CC, so operators need certification from an accredited body and an employer evaluation, while riggers and signal persons must be qualified for the task. Our Arizona requirements page explains the details. For an overview of what to budget, the certification cost guide breaks down the pieces.
With Tucson about 35 to 50 minutes up I-19, most Green Valley candidates find written and practical exam dates in the Tucson area. Practical exams need a real crane of the right type and an accredited examiner, so schedule after you have studied.
- Articulating crane operator and service truck crane operator for residential and service work.
- Mobile crane operator for commercial and mine-contractor jobs.
- Rigger Level II for mine maintenance and planned lifts.
- Mobile crane recertification for experienced operators renewing a card.
Common questions
How is this page different from the Sahuarita page?
Sahuarita is an incorporated town with its own permits and more new construction. Green Valley is unincorporated, older and leans toward remodel and service work, though both share the I-19 corridor and nearby mines.
I'm retired from mine maintenance. Is it worth getting certified now?
If you plan to keep doing crane or rigging work, a current accredited card documents your knowledge for new employers. Whether it makes sense depends on your plans.
Does the course include the practical exam?
No. We cover the knowledge exams. The practical is taken separately on a real crane through the certifying body.
