Marana Crane Certification on the I-10 Logistics Corridor

Marana sits on Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix, and its economic development team pitches exactly that: easy freeway access to Tucson, Phoenix, Mexico and points east. The result has been a steady run of industrial and distribution projects around the Tangerine Road interchange, along with bioscience manufacturing that moved up from nearby Oro Valley. That mix produces crane work that is mostly mobile crane and boom truck, with a lot of rigging. Our online courses help Marana workers prepare for the accredited written exams that open those jobs.

What's going up around Tangerine Road

Flint Development bought 129 acres at Tangerine Road and I-10 for the Southern Arizona Logistics Center, with more than 1.7 million square feet of industrial space planned and the first two buildings totaling nearly a million square feet. Shamrock Foods planned a food distribution center on the northwest corner of the same interchange in the Gladden Farms area. Ventana Medical Systems also built a logistics and distribution center in the nearby Tangerine Commerce Park.

Big distribution buildings mean tilt-up or precast walls, long-span roof steel and racking, and later dock equipment and rooftop units. The early phases bring in large mobile cranes; later phases bring boom trucks and smaller hydraulic cranes.

Bioscience manufacturing moves in

Roche Tissue Diagnostics broke ground in May 2021 on a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing building next to its existing logistics facility in Marana, with Barker Contracting as builder. The building handles instrument and service production, and the move was meant to free up space for diagnostic assay production on the company's Oro Valley campus. Roche put its total investment, including the Oro Valley remodel, at about $43.5 million.

Lifting for a medical-device plant is mostly about equipment: air handlers, process tools and clean utility systems. Loads are usually moderate in weight but expensive and sensitive, so rigging and load control matter more than raw capacity.

Credentials for Marana's mix

ADOSH enforces construction crane rules in Arizona that track federal Subpart CC, so the certification requirement for crane operators applies in Marana exactly as it does in Phoenix. There is no state or town crane license.

Desert conditions and the drive to test

Marana's industrial land is mostly flat, open former farmland and desert, which means good crane access and almost no shade. ADOSH has emphasized heat illness since 2023, and Arizona's 2026 employer heat guidelines spell out water, shade, rest and acclimatization. A little farther up the interstate, the I-10 segment between Picacho Peak and Eloy is so prone to blowing dust that ADOT installed a dust detection and variable speed limit system there. The winds that create those conditions also cross job sites, so watch gusts on panel and roof picks.

You take the written exam at a proctored computer testing site and schedule the practical exam with the certifying body at an accredited site. Marana's position on I-10 helps here: sessions in Tucson are close, and Phoenix-area sessions are a manageable drive north. Nearby: Tucson, Oro Valley and, up the interstate, Casa Grande.

Common questions

Is there much crane work in Marana compared with Tucson?

Marana's industrial growth along I-10 has generated steady construction, but it varies project to project. Many Marana operators also work in Tucson and Pinal County.

Do I need certification to deliver materials with a boom truck?

Articulating cranes that only deliver materials to the ground without arranging them can fall under an exemption. Once the crane holds or places material into a structure, operator certification is required.

Can I study while working full-time?

Yes. Lessons are self-paced, so you can study around shifts and take the exams when you are ready.
