Crane Certification Prep for Somerton and the Lower Yuma Valley
Somerton lies on US 95 about 12 miles south of Yuma, in the middle of some of the most productive winter vegetable ground in the country. Fields of lettuce, celery, broccoli and cauliflower run right up to the edge of town, and the farm economy behind them depends on equipment that someone has to lift, install and repair. If you work in ag service, construction or utilities around Somerton and want an accredited crane or rigging card, our online course prepares you for the written exams on your own schedule.

Farm country that runs on heavy equipment
University of Arizona extension material puts roughly 95 percent of Arizona's lettuce acreage in the lower Colorado and Gila river valleys of Yuma County, and Somerton sits in the heart of the lower valley. Family operations here have farmed since the early 1900s, rotating winter vegetables with alfalfa, wheat and Medjool dates.
That agriculture creates crane work that people outside the region rarely think about. Irrigation pump stations and motors get pulled and reset. Cooling and packing facilities need refrigeration units, condensers and steel framing. Date growers use lifts for palm work and offshoot transplanting, and equipment dealers move heavy implements on and off trucks. Most of this is done with boom trucks, articulating cranes and service cranes rather than big crawlers, so those certifications are often the most practical starting point.
Low elevation, high heat and soft fields
At around 100 feet above sea level, the lower Yuma Valley is among the hottest places in Arizona during summer. Crews start early and stop early, and the heat affects more than comfort: hydraulic systems run hot, steel rigging hardware left in the sun can burn bare hands, and fatigue makes signal persons and riggers slower to react. Shade, water and rotation are part of a lift plan in July.
The other local hazard is ground. Irrigated fields and canal banks look firm but can be saturated a foot down. Before setting outriggers at the edge of a field or near a canal, find out when it was last watered, use mats sized for the load, and keep well back from bank edges. Canal maintenance roads may also have weight restrictions set by the irrigation district.
Growth between Yuma and San Luis
Somerton has been growing alongside its neighbor San Luis to the south, and city officials argued after 2020 that the census undercounted residents because building permits pointed to more homes than the count reflected. New neighborhoods, schools and commercial buildings mean truss sets, precast and steel erection work on a regular basis. The Cocopah Indian Tribe, whose reservation borders the city on the east and west, is also a significant local employer with entertainment and hospitality properties.
Bigger projects across the region, from Yuma commercial work to infrastructure near the border, often draw on the same pool of Somerton-area operators and riggers.
Earning an accredited card from Somerton
Arizona leaves operator licensing to federal standards. ADOSH, part of the Industrial Commission of Arizona, enforces the OSHA construction crane rule, so operators need accredited certification plus an employer evaluation, and riggers and signal persons must be qualified for the work they do. See our Arizona certification requirements for specifics.
Online study handles the knowledge side: load charts, operating procedures, inspections and regulations. The practical exam has to be done on a real crane with an accredited examiner, and availability around Yuma varies, so plan ahead and check dates through your certifying body. If you are just getting started, our guide to becoming a crane operator in Arizona walks through the steps in order.
- Articulating crane operator for knuckle-boom trucks hauling equipment and materials.
- Service truck crane operator for pump, well and equipment service crews.
- Rigger Level I for anyone hooking loads at coolers, sheds and construction sites.
- Mobile crane operator for larger hydraulic cranes on commercial and public projects.
Common questions
Do farm equipment lifts require OSHA crane certification?
The OSHA certification rule applies to construction work. Agricultural and general-industry lifts can fall under different rules. Many employers and insurers still prefer certified operators, and the card is required the moment you take construction jobs.
Where do Somerton candidates take the practical exam?
That depends on the certifying body and the crane type. Some candidates find dates in the Yuma area; others travel to Phoenix. Schedule through the certifying body once you are ready.
Is the course mobile friendly?
Yes. Lessons and practice questions run on a phone or tablet, and your progress saves between sessions.
