Gila County Crane Certification for Mine, Smelter and Rim Country Work

Gila County is copper country with a mountain town on top. In the south, the Globe-Miami district and the Hayden area hold open pits, two smelters and a rod plant, where maintenance never really stops. In the north, Payson and the communities below the Mogollon Rim build homes, schools and utility lines in pine forest. Our online exam prep is built for people who work shifts in Globe or commute from Payson and need to study when the schedule allows.

Inside the Globe-Miami district

Capstone Copper's Pinto Valley mine, at the west end of the district about 80 miles east of Phoenix, runs the only operating mill in the area along with a solvent extraction and electrowinning plant. A 2021 Forest Service approval extended its permitted life to 2039, preserving roughly 700 jobs.

A few miles away in the Tri-Town area of Globe, Claypool and Miami, Freeport-McMoRan's Miami smelter processes concentrate from Bagdad, Sierrita, Morenci and other mines, and an adjacent rod plant turns cathode into copper rod. Smelter work is some of the most demanding rigging in the state: heavy refractory, ladles, fans and ductwork moved through hot, cramped buildings during scheduled outages.

Hayden, Winkelman and the southern corner

Asarco's Hayden plant near the confluence of the Gila and San Pedro rivers includes a smelter and concentrator with operations dating to 1909. Together with the Ray mine across the line in Pinal County, it anchors the local economy. Contractor crews that support shutdowns here often travel between Hayden, Ray and the Globe-Miami plants, which makes a portable national credential valuable.

The San Carlos Apache Reservation spans the eastern part of the county, and tribal health, housing and infrastructure work adds steady demand for crews. Along US 60 between Globe and Superior, highway maintenance, rockfall protection and bridge work on a winding mountain road call for operators who can set up on narrow shoulders with traffic control in place. Each of these settings tests knowledge of ground conditions, outrigger placement and load chart deductions, the same topics the written exams probe.

Which certifications fit Gila County

Rim Country conditions and test planning

Payson sits near 5,000 feet beneath the Mogollon Rim, so winter brings snow and icy roads on SR 87 and SR 260, while summer monsoon storms build quickly over the Rim. Globe and Miami sit lower but in steep canyon terrain, where crane setup on sloped benches and narrow plant roads calls for careful cribbing and swing planning. Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River, northwest of Globe, is another landmark structure in the county.

Most Gila candidates drive US 60 or SR 87 to the Phoenix metro, roughly 90 minutes from either Globe or Payson, for written and practical exams. Read our Arizona requirements overview to see how federal and state rules fit together.

Common questions

Are smelter jobs covered by MSHA or ADOSH?

It depends on how the facility is classified. Mines and many mills fall under MSHA, while some processing and construction work falls under OSHA rules enforced by ADOSH. Your employer will know which applies.

Is Rigger Level 2 worth it for mine work?

If you plan or lead complex lifts, Level 2 covers load weights, center of gravity and rigging selection in more depth, which matches what smelter outages demand.

Can I prepare while working rotating shifts?

Yes. There are no set class times, and your progress saves so you can pick up after a run of nights.
