Crane Certification for Globe-Miami Copper Country
Globe and its neighbor Miami have been copper towns for more than a century, and the lifting work here still revolves around ore. Capstone Copper's Pinto Valley mine, running since 1974, operates an open pit, a 60,000-ton-per-day concentrator and an SX/EW plant west of town. In Miami, Freeport-McMoRan's smelter, first fired in 1915, processes concentrate from the company's Arizona mines and is one of only two operating copper smelters in the country. That is heavy industrial work, and heavy industrial lifting. This page covers how crane certification fits into mine and plant jobs around Globe, and how to prepare online for the national exams before you make the trip to test.

Mill, pit and smelter: three kinds of lifting
Each type of site has its own crane rhythm. A concentrator needs periodic changes of mill liners, pump casings, motors and gearboxes, often during planned shutdowns when crews work around the clock. Mobile and overhead cranes do most of that work, with riggers handling heavy, awkward components in tight spaces.
In the pit and the truck shop, maintenance crews swap haul-truck components, buckets and tires, frequently with service-truck cranes and large mobile cranes. At a smelter, lifting happens around heat, molten material and corrosive conditions, which puts a premium on equipment inspection, rigging selection and communication. Freeport has said it is evaluating a possible expansion of the Miami smelter, and Capstone describes Pinto Valley as permitted to operate into 2039, so this work is not going away.
How the rules apply on mine property
Here is a detail many people miss. Active mining operations are generally regulated by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration rather than OSHA, and MSHA does not use the same crane operator certification rule found in OSHA's construction standard. Even so, mines and their contractors commonly require accredited crane certification as a hiring and site-access standard, because it is a widely recognized proof of competence.
Contractors doing construction work, such as new buildings, plant upgrades or highway projects in Gila County, fall under OSHA's crane standard enforced by ADOSH, Arizona's State Plan agency. Under 29 CFR 1926.1427, that means certified operators. Arizona does not issue a state crane license.
Copper country also has a long memory of old workings. Ground near historic mine sites, tailings and fill can be unpredictable, so experienced crews around Globe treat ground-bearing checks as a habit rather than a formality. The written exams cover how outrigger loads transfer into the ground and how mats and cribbing spread them, which is directly useful here.
Recommended courses for copper country
If you already hold a card that is nearing its five-year expiration, our mobile crane recertification course is built for a refresher rather than a first pass.
- Mobile crane operator for hydraulic and lattice cranes used in shutdowns and construction
- Service truck crane operator for mine maintenance mechanics
- Rigger Level II for crews handling heavy, irregular mill components
- Signal person for blind lifts inside plants and structures
Heat, hills and the road to Phoenix
Globe sits around 3,500 feet in the Pinal Mountains foothills. Summers are hot, though not as brutal as the low desert, and monsoon storms bring wind and lightning to exposed plant structures and pit benches. Uneven ground in the hills around town makes crane setup a frequent challenge.
Online study covers the written material; the practical exam is a separate hands-on test through the certifying body that no course can replace. Globe candidates usually travel west on US 60 toward the Phoenix area, often testing on the east side near Apache Junction or Mesa. Payson and Safford crews face similar trips, and Florence is the other direction to check for sessions.
Common questions
Does MSHA require NCCCO certification at the mines near Globe?
MSHA does not have the same operator certification rule as OSHA's construction standard. Many mines and contractors still require accredited certification as a condition of hiring or site access, so confirm with the employer.
Will certification get me hired at a mine?
We cannot promise that. Certification is a common requirement for crane jobs, but hiring decisions belong to employers.
Where do Globe residents take crane exams?
Exams are scheduled through the certifying body. Most Globe candidates travel toward the Phoenix area.
