Graham County · Copper and valley exam prep
Gila Valley Crane Certification for Safford Workers
About eight miles north of Safford, Freeport-McMoRan runs an open-pit copper operation that has produced since 2007. It leaches ore and recovers copper through a solvent extraction and electrowinning plant, and today the Lone Star deposit is where the mining happens. Freeport has also been running pre-feasibility studies on a potentially significant expansion in the Lone Star district, with completion expected in 2026. Safford is about 170 miles east of Phoenix, so local workers feel the distance to testing centers. Studying online lets you prepare for national crane certification exams without leaving the Gila Valley until it is time to test.

Leach pads, SX/EW and the cranes that keep them running
A leach-and-electrowinning operation has a different lifting profile than a concentrator. Electrowinning tank houses involve repeated handling of cathodes and anodes, pumps and piping need regular change-outs, and leach pad expansions bring in contractors to install liners, pipe and pumping systems. Truck shops swap heavy components on haul trucks and loaders constantly.
Freeport invested about $820 million in the first phase of Lone Star, which started in 2018 and used existing Safford infrastructure. Whether the expansion studies lead to new construction is Freeport's decision, but projects of that size draw mobile crane operators, riggers and signal persons from across the region.
Desert valley heat and a 10,000-foot neighbor
Safford sits around 2,900 feet on the Gila River, with summers that are hot by any standard. Heat affects crane work in a few ways: operator fatigue, hydraulic and engine temperatures, and sun-baked steel that is hard to handle. Monsoon storms add sudden gusts, blowing dust and lightning.
Mount Graham rises to the southwest, and the University of Arizona's Mount Graham International Observatory, including the Large Binocular Telescope at about 10,500 feet, is a reminder that this valley also hosts unusual, specialized projects. Work at elevation is cold and windy even when the valley floor is baking.
The valley is also agricultural, and irrigation districts, cotton gins and farm suppliers along the Gila occasionally need equipment lifted onto pads or into buildings. Those are smaller jobs than a mine shutdown, but they are often handled by a local contractor with one boom truck and one operator who does everything, which is exactly the person who benefits from documented training.
Rules that apply in Graham County
Mining operations are generally regulated by MSHA, which does not use OSHA's construction crane certification rule. Mines and their contractors still commonly require accredited certification, and construction contractors working under OSHA must use certified operators under 29 CFR 1926.1427. In Arizona, ADOSH enforces those federal standards through the state's OSHA plan. There is no state crane license.
Qualified riggers and signal persons are required under 1926.1425 and 1926.1428 for many construction lifts. A national certification is the cleanest way to show you meet that bar.
Courses and test-day planning
We prepare you for the written exams; the practical exam is an in-person test run through the certifying body and cannot be done online. Safford candidates often weigh Tucson against the Phoenix area for exam dates, depending on schedules. Globe sits along the route west, and crews in Douglas to the south face similar distances.
- Service truck crane operator for mine maintenance and field mechanics
- Mobile crane operator for contractors on plant and pad construction
- Rigger Level I and Rigger Level II for crews handling heavy components
- Signal person for congested plant sites
Common questions
Is Freeport's Safford expansion approved?
As of Freeport's most recent annual report we reviewed, the company was conducting pre-feasibility studies expected to finish in 2026. Check Freeport's investor materials for current status.
Do mine employees need NCCCO certification?
MSHA does not have the same operator certification rule as OSHA. Many mines still require accredited certification, so ask the employer.
Where will I take exams from Safford?
Exams are scheduled through the certifying body. Most Safford candidates travel to Tucson or the Phoenix area.
