Mesa Crane Certification for Data Center and Aerospace Crews
Drive Elliot Road through southeast Mesa and the skyline is low, wide and full of rooftop equipment. That is the data center corridor, and it has kept mobile cranes busy setting steel, generators, chillers and switchgear for years. Up north near Falcon Field, a very different kind of plant builds attack helicopters. Mesa crane work tends to reward operators who can read a chart precisely and riggers who understand heavy, compact, expensive loads. Our online courses prepare you for the accredited written exams that open those jobs.

Who builds along Elliot Road
Mesa has openly welcomed data centers while some neighboring cities have tightened the rules. Apple converted a former sapphire-glass factory of about 1.3 million square feet into one of its data centers. Meta has a multi-building campus planned at more than 2.5 million square feet, Google's Mesa project is known as its Redhawk campus, Amazon filed plans for sites including one next to the Apple building, and EdgeConneX, NTT and EdgeCore have also built or planned facilities in the area.
For crane crews, data center work is repetitive in a good way. The same picks happen building after building: precast or tilt-up panels, roof steel, packaged mechanical units, generator sets and transformers. The loads are dense and often set close to the radius limit, so the load chart and the rigging calculation matter more than raw tonnage.
Matching your certification to Mesa projects
Under 29 CFR 1926.1427 the employer must also evaluate each certified operator on the equipment they will actually run. Your card gets you considered; the evaluation gets you in the seat.
- Mobile crane operator for hydraulic truck and all-terrain cranes doing structural and equipment sets.
- Rigger Level 1 for crew members who attach loads and inspect slings, shackles and spreader bars.
- Rigger Level 2 for the person who selects the rigging, estimates weights and finds the center of gravity on a lopsided generator skid.
- Articulating crane operator for boom-truck drivers delivering materials into tight industrial lots.
North Mesa: helicopters, hangars and indoor lifting
Boeing has built the AH-64 Apache in Mesa since the early 1980s, at a plant just north of Falcon Field near McDowell and Higley roads. In late 2025 the Army awarded the Mesa operation a $4.7 billion production contract running into 2032, followed by a $2.7 billion support contract. Aerospace plants depend mostly on overhead and gantry cranes inside the building, which fall under general-industry rules rather than the construction crane standard, but expansions, hangar work and equipment moves bring mobile cranes and certified riggers onto the property.
Down at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, a five-gate, 30,000-square-foot terminal addition opened in February 2024 after McCarthy finished construction, and an aerospace park has been planned on airport land. Airport jobs add height limits and coordination with operations.
Heat, dust and your test day
East Valley summers routinely push past 110°F, and ADOSH has made heat a standing emphasis since 2023. Cab air conditioning helps the operator, but riggers and signalers work on hot steel and concrete, so crews plan heavy picks for the early morning. Monsoon outflow winds can arrive with little warning in July and August; crews should stop and lower when gusts approach the manufacturer's posted limit.
Proctored computer testing for the written exams is available across the metro, and practical exams are scheduled through the certifying body at accredited test sites. From most of Mesa, that is a short drive rather than a trip. If you live farther east, see our pages for Gilbert, Queen Creek and Apache Junction.
Common questions
Do data center jobs in Mesa require a specific crane certification?
Any operator of a covered construction crane must be certified for that type and capacity. Most Mesa data center picks use mobile cranes, so a mobile designation is the usual starting point. Some general contractors also require certified riggers and signal persons for every lift.
I run an overhead crane at a Mesa plant. Do I need NCCCO?
Overhead cranes in a factory fall under general-industry rules that require training and evaluation rather than construction-style certification. Some employers still prefer a recognized certification. If you also run mobile cranes on construction work, certification is required for that.
How long is a crane certification good for?
NCCCO operator certifications run for five years. You recertify before expiration, which our recertification course is built to support.
