Crane Operator and Rigger Certification for Chandler Fab Work
Chandler's biggest lifting customer is a chipmaker. Intel's Ocotillo campus in south Chandler has drawn crane crews for decades, and the two newest fabs there put thousands of construction workers on one site. Fab construction is slow, careful and heavily documented. A dropped load near a cleanroom shell is not just a safety event; it can set a billion-dollar schedule back. That is why owners there screen credentials closely, and why our online exam prep focuses on the precision side of crane work: load charts, rigging math and communication.

Inside a fab build
Intel broke ground on Fab 52 and Fab 62 at Ocotillo in September 2021, a project of roughly $20 billion that Intel said would support about 3,000 construction jobs. ENR reported the campus covers about 700 acres, with Hoffman Construction as general contractor and Jacobs as designer, and noted that Intel fabs typically stand around 70 feet tall.
Seventy feet does not sound like much until you remember what goes on the roof and inside the subfab: air handlers, exhaust scrubbers, process piping racks and tool components that are sensitive to shock. Picks are usually engineered, set at a fixed radius and repeated many times. Operators who can hold a load steady at the edge of the chart, and riggers who can rig a top-heavy skid so it hangs level, are the people these jobs want.
Credentials owner-controlled sites tend to check
Large manufacturers in Chandler commonly run their own contractor safety programs on top of ADOSH rules. Before you are badged, expect someone to verify:
- An accredited operator certification for the crane category you will run, not just a company training card.
- A documented employer evaluation, which 1926.1427 requires separately from certification.
- A qualified rigger for hooking and unhooking, as 1926.1425 requires during assembly and hoisting work.
- A qualified signal person whenever the operator's view is blocked, under 1926.1428.
Why data centers look different here than in Mesa
In December 2022 the Chandler City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 5033, which allows new data centers only through Planned Area Development zoning approval and adds noise study requirements. Existing facilities were not affected. The practical result for crane crews is that Chandler's data center work leans toward expansions and approved sites, while new greenfield campuses have tended to land elsewhere in the Valley. If that is the work you want, our Mesa and Goodyear pages cover those corridors.
Courses that fit Chandler work
Most Chandler operators start with mobile crane operator prep, since fab and industrial work runs on hydraulic and crawler cranes. Rigging staff should look at Rigger Level 2, which covers load weight estimation and center of gravity, both regular topics in engineered lift plans. Signal person prep is worth adding for anyone who directs picks over or between buildings.
Hot months shape scheduling. Heavy picks start at first light from roughly May through September, and ADOSH guidelines approved in 2026 stress water, shade, rest and acclimatization. Studying online lets you work through lessons on your own time instead of losing a shift to a classroom. When you are ready, the written exam is taken at a proctored computer testing location in the metro, and the practical exam is scheduled through the certifying body at an accredited site, typically a reasonable drive from Chandler.
Common questions
Does Intel hire crane operators directly?
Construction lifting at a fab is generally done by contractors and crane rental companies working for the general contractor, not by the chipmaker's own staff. Check with those contractors about openings; we do not place students in jobs.
What is the difference between Rigger Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 covers rigging inspection and basic hitches under direction. Level 2 adds selecting rigging, estimating load weight and center of gravity, and working without direct supervision, which is closer to what engineered fab lifts demand.
Can I take the practical exam online?
No. The practical exam is always hands-on, on a real crane, in front of an examiner at an accredited test site. Online study prepares you for the written exams and explains the practical tasks.
Is a Chandler city permit needed to set up a crane?
That depends on whether the crane occupies public right-of-way. It is separate from operator certification, and your contractor handles it with the city.
